On MBC’s August 12th broadcastRadio star, ” Sunmi appeared as a guest at the founder of JYP Entertainment Jin Young Park and talked about her duet “When We Disco”, her difficult times during the US tour of Wonder Girls, for which she wrote a song TWICE, and more.
Sunmi told Park Jin Young how she got “When We Disco” released. Sunmi said she was eating at a restaurant when she heard a song she and Park Jin Young heard while in New York. Sunmi, glad to hear a song from the past, recorded the song on her cell phone and sent it to Park Jin Young. She then said that Park Jin Young sent her a demo for a new song in response.
Park Jin Young said, “I texted her and asked if she missed the days we worked together. Sunmi had no choice but to say yes. “
Sunmi explained, “I said I would work with him and thought I was just going to be in the song, but when I saw the lyrics I had a whole verse. When I asked if it was a duet, he wrote me one SMS with a smiley. “
She then said, “I asked him if he was thinking of anyone else for the song and he replied,” No, there is no one but you. “
Park Jin Young added that Sunmi texted him as soon as he started writing the lyrics for When We Disco. He said, “I thought it was fate.”
Sunmi shared a funny story about how she got through filming the music video. “It’s not easy to be two inches [approximately 2 inches] away from Park Jin Young while looking into his eyes, ”she said. “I had to act like his lover on the music video, and it was hard at first, so I looked at the space between his eyes.”
Sunmi later spoke about her difficult time with the Wonder Girls in the United States. She revealed that they were staying on her tour bus and that she had to share a bunk bed with Park Jin Young, with Sunmi on the second level and Park Jin Young on the third.
“When he got to the third level of the bunk bed, the mattress sank so much it felt like sleeping in a coffin,” said Sunmi.
Park Jin Young added, “Wonder Girls was the last artist I could really come into contact with. I had to take care of g.o.d and Wonder Girls myself, but after that there were things like issues with the agency so I couldn’t see everyone else that often. “
Sunmi addressed the difficulties of traveling to the United States. “I was 18 when I went to the US and it was mentally tough,” she admitted. Sunmi mentioned that the group had to apply even before the concert to hand out flyers alongside Park Jin Young.
Park Jin Young said, “It felt like Wonder Girls were going to make it big. But at the end of 2008 [the global financial services firm] Lehman Brothers collapsed and all music labels went bankrupt. “He then said that the five years he invested in the US Wonder Girls project had come to nothing. However, all was not lost when Sunmi said she made many great memories with her members during the time.
Sunmi also talked about writing a song for TWICE. She said, “Some time ago someone at JYP asked me to write a song TWICE. I even wrote the lyrics while I was thinking about the members to make them fit the group. “She then revealed that the song was ultimately rejected. “I think the song was too sexy to be TWICE,” said Sunmi.
Sunmi then told a story about how she recorded her song “24 hours” in 2013. She said, “I remember recording the same syllable for three days.” Sunmi mentioned that she was nervous about recording “When We Disco” with Park Jin Young because of this. “We paid a lot of attention to the details, but this time we finished recording pretty quickly,” she revealed.
Park Jin Young and Sunmi later performed their duet for the first time. Check out the full power below!
