Grey’s anatomyDr. Meredith Gray has gone through several life-threatening moments, including almost drowning, holding on to a gun and surviving a plane crash, followed by several days in the wild. But one of her most memorable near-death experiences came in season two, when Gray was almost blown up by a bomb stuck in a patient. Actress Ellen Pompeo also remembers it well.
For the explosion scene, a stunt double was strapped into a cable that tore it backwards down a corridor. According to Weekly entertainmentAt the first shot, she hit her head on the floor and got a concussion. Peter Horton, who directed the episode, wanted more shots, so he asked an already exhausted Pompeo to intervene.
There was a big fight in which Pompeo Horton said, “A damn professional stunt woman has just suffered a concussion. … Now should I try?” In the end, Pompeo gave in, even though she claimed they used the first shot anyway. However, Horton insists that they used footage with the actress, adding, “We would never have put her in danger. We pulled her much slower than the stunt double.”
