The Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) has imposed most of the sanctions against Mnet’s “Produce” series for tampering with votes.
On August 10th, the KCSC stated: “Due to an unprecedented level of tampering with the show, we have fined all seasons of the“ Produce ”series. All four “Produce” seasons receive a fine, which represents the highest possible degree of sanction, for manipulating the voting results of the viewers. “
Earlier that day, the KCSC held a general meeting at the broadcasting center in Mokdong, Seoul. The final decision was made in combination for all four seasons of “Produce” including “Produce 101”, “Produce 101 Season 2”, “Produce 48” and “Produce X 101”.
Mnet’s “Produce” series has been accused of manipulating individual episode voices as well as manipulating the votes arbitrarily to change who was eliminated and who was not and to broadcast the results as if they were legitimate. The KCSC came to the conclusion that the first season of “Produce” showed signs of manipulation in both the fourth and the first round.
The KCSC stated, “The main point of the program was to use audience participation to create a group based solely on audience votes. To this end, they asked for votes through paid texts. Not only have they manipulated the results, misled viewers and obstructed fair public perception, but the most serious problem is betrayal of the hard work of those involved in the foreplay program. “
The KCSC will later determine the amount of the fine based on the exact content, degree, time period and frequency of the offense under Article 109 of the Broadcasting Act.
Also at that meeting, the KCSC warned the SBS drama “The King: Eternal Monarch” about excessive product placement.
