SM Entertainment has teamed up with Jongro Haneul Education to create the SM Institute (SMI), a global arts education institution for the education of stars.
SMI will offer an educational program based on industry knowledge that has made K-Pop and K-Culture a global phenomenon. The institute will also offer classes in various languages - including Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese – for its local and international students to become global stars.
The subsidiary of SM Entertainment, ESteem, is also involved in the founding and management of SMI and will contribute the company’s expertise in the areas of model, entertainer and influencer management as well as fashion, beauty and lifestyle content to further expand the scope of the stars produced by SMI.
After a memorandum of understanding was signed between SM Entertainment and Jongro Haneul Education in 2016, the two companies created a systematic educational program and curriculum using SM’s expertise in celebrity education and content production.
In addition to its offline curriculum, SMI will use adaptive learning technologies, artificial intelligence and cutting edge educational technologies to provide the best education even in times of social distancing, and SMI plans to export Korea’s “ed” -tech ”solutions.
Choi Jin Young, president of the SMI, said, “To become a pop culture artist, immense hours of practice and practical training are required. As a result, many trainees give up their training. SMI will actively use online education and custom education content and plans to support students so they don’t have to give up their education to become global stars. We will also support the students so that they can explore different paths with their talents. “
The SMI is preparing to open its doors in March 2021. As of October 2020, the institute plans to accept applications from students from Korea and abroad. SMI also plans to create an international office to drive the “Hallyu wave” of the education business.
