Ren from NU’EST has successfully completed appearances on “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie”, where he starred in his first musical since his debut!
After saying goodbye to the musical with his last appearance on September 6th, Ren spoke of finding courage, his greatest supporters, and received advice from 2am Jo Kwonand more in a recent interview.
Ren said, “There were times when I lost faith in myself when I was idolized. Whenever that happened, I blamed myself and put myself under pressure, but after taking the stage for “Jamie” this time and hearing good reviews from others, I felt like I was finding the trust that I once did had lost. It became a time for me to affirm that I can believe in myself more in the future. “
Ren shared his thoughts at the end of his first musical. “Instead of feeling relieved, I’m more likely to be disappointed,” he admitted. “Maybe it’s because my character is someone I can’t meet everywhere, but I felt more connected to him. When I was thinking about how to part with Jamie, I couldn’t even fall asleep. I was very confused I started getting attached to my co-stars too, so it’s a real shame. “
Ren talked about how he felt when he first got the news that he had been cast for “Jamie”. He said, “I was a little bit incredulous. I studied the musical, saw the performances of the original “Jamie,” and began to worry after seeing the actors do amazing chants, dances, and so many lines. I felt pressured to do well. Even before I went on stage for my first gig, I asked the people around me for advice. “
He continued, “In particular, my parents said to me, ‘You have to do this. Isn’t that an incredible opportunity? Passing the auditions means that you can have so much more confidence. “They cheered me on and I found courage. Regardless of whether people liked my performance or not, I felt that I had to face the challenge.”
Ren spoke openly about the limitations of being an idol. “There were a lot of things that I wanted to show as ‘Choi Min Ki’. [Ren’s birth name], but there was a limit, ”he began. “I wanted to show people more of my artistic side, my skills or my charm, but I didn’t have a lot of opportunities. I always wanted to do more. So when the auditions for“ Jamie ”were announced, I felt that I really had to try it. “
Ren continued, “I’ve worked very hard. Aside from eating and sleeping, I haven’t let go of my script. Of course, I can’t judge whether I did well or not, but I’m really grateful that my fans are proud of me for making this musical. “
The musical tells the story of 17-year-old Jamie who faces prejudice in order to follow his dreams and find his true self. Ren talked about the similarities between him and his character. “I was 16 when I came to Seoul with a dream,” he said. “I was happy and excited. When I started my life as a trainee, every day was more difficult than expected because I didn’t know what would happen to my future. “
He added, “I’ve seen a lot of my friends who were unable to debut on the ratings at all after they were disqualified. I was continually concerned.” Ren also said that living apart from his parents added fear. “That’s why my love and affection for my family is still strong now,” he said. “My family is the greatest existence for me.”
Ren shared that his family enabled him to overcome the stress of being an apprentice. He talked about living with his grandparents, who were his greatest supporters. “I could rely on my grandparents,” said Ren. “They never discouraged me and they always showed how proud and confident they were of me.”
He continued, “After my debut, they saw me on TV and were both very amazed and happy. That in itself makes me incredibly happy. That’s why I resonated with the part of the musical where the support of Jamie’s mother and aunt enables him to overcome discrimination in society. “
Ren also spoke about how grateful he is for every audience that has seen his performances even during the COVID-19 pandemic. “All I can say is, ‘I’m grateful,” “he said. “We are in a very cautious situation and going to the theater can be a burden. But that also means that the audience has shown up and trusted the person Choi Min Ki and the musical” Jamie “.”
He continued: “It’s actually very difficult to go to a theater with the thought of cheering someone on and enjoying the musical. Still, I don’t think I can ever forget the fans who showed up in the theater during those times Now I feel like I have to do better things in the future and show my fans even better things. “
Ren expressed his wish to include more musicals in the future. “I was dying to advertise in the past and it was difficult because there weren’t many options, but ‘Jamie’ solved that problem,” he said. “With the certainty that I have successfully completed this project, I would like to try other musicals. I would also like to try another genre of acting. When I hear someone say, “I see that Choi Min Ki has these amazing skills,” I think it will be very fulfilling. “He added with a laugh,” I hope the people who work on musicals see my potential and give me a call. “
Ren also shared his gratitude to Jo Kwon at 2 a.m., with whom he had worked on the musical. “I was very nervous because it was my first musical,” said Ren. “Fortunately, so many actors have encouraged and supported me. Jo Kwon in particular has given me a lot of good advice as a lead artist. “
He continued, “Jo Kwon is someone who has acted a lot in musicals while promoting as an idol, so he has a lot of experience. After I was cast on “Jamie”, he talked to me a lot about the problems of being an idol and the paths I can take to become a musical actor. Jo Kwon also told me that he wishes I didn’t go through this as he has had such a tough time in the past. “
“I thought he was very cool because he told me such beautiful things when we first met,” commented Ren. “I thought,” People who have succeeded are really different. “
