The debut is a big deal for trainees who spend their teenage years working hard to get to the moment when they’re revealed to the K-pop scene and shine as a rookie group. However, some of them debut again among different groups for many reasons.
Here are some idols that have been reissued with new groups in different circumstances and have experimented with different concepts and sounds.
1. Dream catcherJiyoo, Sua, Siyeon, Yoohyeon and Dami
Originally debuting as MINX in 2014, the five members changed both their group name and concept three years later when they were supported by two new members, Handong and Gahyeon. Needless to say, this move has been a very successful step as DreamCatcher has become one of the leading K-pop groups incorporating the rock genre into their music.
2. Khan’s Jeon Minju and Euna Kim
The Ark was one of the few hip-hop girl groups that made an impact in the music industry. Unfortunately, they disbanded in 2016 after only being active for a year. Ark members Minju and Euna dived in 2018 as a duo with their single “I’m Your Girl?” On. It was quite a success, but they parted ways in 2020.
For many, Mino is known to debut as a WINNER member after participating in Mnet’s “WIN: Who Is Next”. In fact, Mino debuted in 2011 as a rapper in the ballad boy band BoM, which only took a couple of years before auditioning for YG Entertainment and began his career as a member of a group and duo (with Bobby) and one as a soloist.
4. KARD’s Somin
Jeon Somin had a fair share of debuts. She started her career in 2012 as a member of the Japanese girl group Puretty, which dissolved two years later. Then she was part of APRIL as a leader in 2015, however, the group left three months later. Finally, Somin found her best fit in 2016 as a member of the Co-Ed group KARD.
APRIL 5 Chaekyung
Chaekyung is another ex-Puretty member who was part of other girl groups, namely the project-based group CIVA from the fan-motivated group IBI “The God of Music 2” and “Produce 101” before finally settling down as an APRIL member . The interesting part is that Chaekyung joined all three groups in the same year 2016.
JB and Jinyoung were apprentices at JYP Entertainment for a long time and founded a duo called JJ Project in 2012 and debuted with their single “Bounce”. They joined Got7 two years later and focused exclusively on group activities. In 2017 the two celebrated a comeback with their first mini album “Verse 2”.
Four boy groups, seven members: This SM Entertainment K-Pop bomb called SuperM served looks and hyped crowds. This concept is definitely unprecedented as it is not just a collaboration between groups, but an independent group that debuted with adequate discography and advertising that took place both domestically and internationally while the members remained part of their original groups.
8. Kwon Sohyun
Sohyun was barely a teenager when she made her debut in 2005 as a member of a group of girls called Orange. Four years later she joined 4minute and was hers Maknae until she left Cube Entertainment in 2016 after her contract expired.
9. EXIDs Solji
Solji’s story is pretty interesting. She began her music career as a member of the 2NB ballad duo for four years since 2006 and then worked as an EXID vocal coach before finally making her debut in 2012.
This function would not be complete without HyunA. She made her original debut as the lead rapper for Wonder Girls in 2007 before leaving the group for health reasons. She later made her second debut at 4Minute in 2009. While maintaining her position in the group, she and Jang Hyunseung formed a co-ed duo called Trouble Maker. In 2016, 4Minute dissolved and HyunA concentrated on her solo career for a while. In 2017, it was hired for the fourth time as part of a three-person sub-unit, Triple H, which finally ended in 2018.
11. NATURE’S Kim So Hee
Another former member of C.I.V.A and I.B.I is Kim So Hee. After her departure, she started her solo career in 2017 and then took a break. Two years later Kim So Hee changed the agency and joined the girls group NATURE. The group recently made a comeback with their title track “Girls”.
12. Former members of GOOD DAY
This time, not only did an idol have a fresh start after they left, but literally the whole group started over. After the members of GOOD DAY 2017 debuted and disbanded two years later, they went their own way. Jeewon, Chaesol, Sunn, Belle and Ye Ah were redefined by the signature, while ChaeA, Green, Ari and Bomin were redefined by Redsquare. Heejin joined Solcire, a manufacturing crew.
13. Kim Dong Han, Jang Dae Hyeon and Kim Yo Han
These three idols have all come under the spotlight on the reality show series “Produce 101” and are joining together as an up-and-coming boy group WEi. Kim Dong Han is a former member of the JBJ project group, and Jang Dae Hyeon was formerly part of the RAINZ project group. Kim Yo Han was the center of X1 before its dissolution.
Bonus: I.O.I., Do you want oneand X1 members
Mnet’s famous survival show series “Produce 101” allowed many group members to either make their first debut before debuting under their own agencies, or to re-debut among the show’s respective girl and boy groups.
After I.O.I. the members are now known as solo artists Chungha and Somi, actress Kim So HyeKim Sejeong and Mina from Gugudan, Jung Chaeyeon from DIA, Yeonjung from WJSN, Choi Yoojung and Kim Doyeon from Weki Meki, and former PRISTIN members Kyulkyung and Nayoung.
Wanna One included HOTSHOTs Ha Sung Woon, NU’ESTs Minhyun, AB6IXs Park Woo Jin and Lee Dae Hwi, CIXs Bae Jin Young and now soloists Kang Daniel, Park Ji Hoon, Kim Jae Hwan, Ong Seong Wuand Yoon Ji Sung. Lai Kuanlin was redefined as Duo Wooseok X Kuanlin with PENTAGONs Wooseok.
Finally X1 greeted UP10TION’S Kim Woo Seok, Han Seung Woo by VICTON and Cho Seung Youn by UNIQ as well as Hyeongjun and Minhee, who later debuted with CRAVITY. Lee Han Gyul and Nam Do Hyon teamed up as Duo H & D. Before X1 and H&D, Lee Han Gyul was part of a group called IM.
