Henry describes the meaning behind the new album "Journey", his experience with "Begin Again" and more

Henry I sat down for an interview and picture with GQ Korea recently!

The artist graced the magazine’s December cover after being named one of GQ’s 2020 Men of the Year. The men’s fashion magazine selects influential personalities who have taken on challenging and creative endeavors.

The interviewer first praised Henry for his bright and positive personality, to which he replied that he also receives this energy from other people. “Sometimes when I’m tired or depressed, I purposely go to a place with lots of people,” he explained. “When I take photos or talk to others, it increases my mood and I regain my energy.”

Henry shared his experience on the JTBC show “Begin Again,” where he said he played with a lot of musicians he has always wanted to meet. He specifically mentioned his duet with Lee So Raand said, “It was an opportunity for me to learn more about myself as an artist. I learned a lot from being next to her. I also came up with some new ideas that I put on my new album. “

The conversation then turned to his YouTube series “Henry Together”, in which he meets and performs with various musical prodigies. Henry said in disbelief that he heard stories from people who started learning how to play musical instruments because of him and that his videos are played in schools.

He also mentioned that he learned from his guests and said, “I’m getting more humble and I think I have to do better. I also enjoy being with children as it makes me feel younger. “He continued,” The most important thing is that the children are comfortable. I want them to see me as a friend so I joke around and exaggerate a lot. I think we get along well as I have a childish side too. Maybe it’s my looks, but kids aren’t really scared of me. “

Henry also brought his own experience with him when he learned to play the violin at the age of six. “I didn’t like it at first. I forced myself to play because my mom wanted to,” he revealed. “When I was 11, I changed my mind after doing well in a competition. I was proud of myself and started enjoying being on stage. Since then I’ve started to work hard and enjoy music. “

When asked how much he enjoys music now, he replied: “I enjoy being able to express my own stories in a beautiful and artistic way. I also like it when people relate to my music. When I performed on “Begin Again” I was really happy to hear that nothing is as calming as music. “

The interviewer praised Henry for his influence as a musician and stated that this was why he was named one of GQ’s Men of the Year. Henry humbly replied, “I think since I can, I should. I’ve received so much love from everyone, but the only way to repay it is through music. So I’m doing my best and I’m relieved to hear such good feedback . “

Henry also revealed that he was struggling with a lack of confidence to the point that he couldn’t even make a single sound on stage. “I’m fine now,” he reassured him. “Begin Again made me realize that I just have to do what I want to do and enjoy the music and that it’s okay to make mistakes. I’d forgotten that for a while.”

After Henry was asked what type of performance he wanted to create, he expressed his desire to perform after the COVID-19 pandemic. He said: “I miss the fans and I appreciate the energy my audience gave me. I want to give an eye-catching, large-scale performance with an orchestra. Something where I can show everyone exactly what I’m capable of. “

Henry’s new mini-album “Journey” with the title track “RADIO” marks his first album in over six years. Describing the album as one that honestly expresses his identity and thoughts, he said, “Before that, I’d make an album while I was wondering what others would think of me. It wasn’t a good method. As I was preparing for this album, I thought a lot about myself instead of other people. “

Henry commented on the title of the album and said that he chose the title “Journey” because it suited his personal story. He elaborated and said, “After growing up in Canada, I was selected for an idol audition when I was 18 and came to Korea. After my debut, I went to different countries and many people got to know me through my appearances in variety shows. I’ve also made films in the US and China. Thinking about it now has been a long journey. With my music I wanted to show everyone where I am right now. “

Henry stated that while he was looking for the reason for his trip, he is now trying harder to keep improving. “I’m not doing it because someone made me. It’s my free will,” he said. “On the other hand, I can’t go this way alone. I have to go with those around me. “

In response to the last question, “Have you ever thought about what is at the end of your journey?” Henry said, “I hope there is no end. I want to continue on this path.”
